Subject: School closure

Dear Parents and Students:

To protect the health of our students, faculty, parents, and entire community, all Woodhaven Public Schools will be closed from Monday, March 16 until April 7, 2020. During this time, we will provide lessons electronically. (Details to follow in a separate email.) We will remain in contact with various Town and State governmental departments in order to make decisions that are in the best interest of our students’ education and health.

In these unprecedented times, please reassure your children that the entire community is working together to keep them safe. I would remind you that all school events, outings, concerts, and field trips, until April 7 have been canceled, as have all classes and events organized by Woodhaven Parks and Recs department. Please note that the town parks and leisure areas are closed until further notice for your safety.

Stay Safe And Socially Distant!

Warmest regards,

Diane Henson, Ph.D

Superintendent of Public Schools

Dear Mrs. Patrick

Thank you for your email regarding this week’s math assignment. I am sorry for any inconvenience that it might have caused. The problem (worksheet 3, question 4, below) to which you refer was intended to be topical but, I now see, was somewhat unfortunate under the current circumstances. The intention, however, was to challenge the students’ logical thinking, rather than use up household items which are currently in short supply. Jack should have been able to arrive at the answer using techniques we have been working on recently. It was not necessary for him to ruin your last remaining roll of bath tissue or your husband’s measuring tape. (I am afraid I cannot comment on how long it will take for a tape measure to dry out, given the current rain.)

Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.

Stay Safe And Socially Distant!

Kind regards,

Kevin McKinley

Question 4: A piece of bathroom tissue is 4.8 inches long. There are 278 sheets in one roll. If the average family uses 32 sheets in one day, how long is the roll after three days, and how many more days will the roll last for? (Round down to the nearest day.)

My wife informs me that the CVS on Main Street, where she works as a pharmacy assistant, is supposed to be getting a shipment of Charmin on Tuesday. For health and safety reasons, she is not permitted to reserve items for non-family, but under the circumstances she is prepared to make an exception.

You’re welcome.

I agree. Going forward, I will limit math problem stories to items which are not as topical or emotive.

Stay Safe And…never mind.
